Identifying Emerging Technologies for Commercial Impact

New technologies and ideas are exciting. Until we get our hands on them, that is. Then we realize that there is a non-insignificant amount of work left to do and we hesitate:  Should I spend any more time on this? Is this ready for (fill the blank)? Is this an innovation? When should I give up?. In lack of a crystal ball the answers (in order) read  NO, NO, NO, NOW.
The problem might appear to be in the technology. It really isn’t. It is in the questions and in a profound misunderstanding of the innovation process. This talk is about the process, hands-on innovation, asking the right questions, and allowing yourself to discover where to go from here. For the last 6 years we have taught this process hands on to over 500 students at MIT, working with over 100 MIT Principal Investigators from all across campus, to figure out what’s next for over 120 technologies from across campus and beyond.

Interest in entrepreneurship is exploding globally yet many people believe that entrepreneurship cannot be taught, that those who become successful were born with something others lack. But the greatest entrepreneurs—Richard Branson, Steve Jobs, Bill Gates, and all the others—really had just one thing in common: They made great products. Disciplined Entrepreneurship offers a comprehensive, integrated and proven step-by-step approach to founding a company through creating an innovative, highly successful product. It breaks down the necessary processes into 24 discrete steps that any industrious person can learn and apply.
